Пионерская организация в Нью-Йорке
Школа № 61 была средней, в которой училось три с половиной тысячи учеников. Школа была переполнена. Обучение происходило в три смены. Самые маленькие классы начинали уроки в 12 часов. Школа была шестиэтажной, в ней не было столовой. И ученики во время обеденного перерыва собирались в спортзале и там ели принесенную из дома еду...
Пионерской организации в школе не было. А жители Бронкса были преимущественно рабочими и их дети учились в основном в школе №61. Директор школы г-н Макгир (MacGuire), был категорически против пионерских организаций. Когда же он узнал, что и в его школе появились пионеры, он был очень зол.
Пионеры на слете решили выпускать каждый месяц свою газету, которую они назвали "Искра", в честь ленинской газеты - "The Young Spark". На первой странице первого номера газеты была помещена забавная карикатура - современное шестиэтажное здание школы №61 и из каждого окна, из-под крыши и даже из трубы смотрят дети. В газете были статьи о жизни американских школ, информация о Совестском Союзе, о жизни советских пионеров. В первом выпуске газеты было всего четыре страницы, но все это выглядело весьма привлекательно. Газета "The Young Spark" была продана тиражом более тысячи экземпляров. Следующий номер был уже на восьми страницах и также разошелся весьма быстро...
School No. 61 was a Junior High, with three thousand five hundred pupils in it. The school was overcrowded. Classes went on in three shifts. The youngest pupils began their lessons at 12 o'clock. In the six-storied building there was no school canteen. During the lunch break the pupils went to the gym and sat there eating the food which they had brought from home.
The Young Pioneer Organization in the school was not the only one in the Bronx. The inhabitants of Bronx were for the most part workers and there were many workers' children at School No. 61.
The Principal of the school Mr. Macguire was against the pioneer organization and when he found out something about their activity he was very angry.
At their meeting the pioneers decided to issue every month their newspaper which they named in honour of Lenin's Spark, The Young Spark. On the front page of the first issue a very funny picture was placed. It showed a six-storied building like School No. 61 and from every window of this building, from under the roof, and even from the chimneys children were looking out. In the newspaper there were articles about American school life, information about the Soviet Union, about the life of Soviet Pioneers. The first issue had four pages and it looked very attractive. The young pioneers sold over one thousand copies of ft. The following issues had eight pages and also sold very quickly.
